Mapping Your Data Model Before You Touch an API
The most common integration failure starts with someone connecting the API endpoints and assuming the data will just flow. It won't - or rather, it will flow, but it'll be nonsensical. Before writing a single line of integration code or configuring any middleware, sit down with your CMMS administrator and your predictive platform vendor and map every field that will cross the boundary.
Asset identification is the first landmine. Your CMMS probably uses an asset number like 'PMP-2301-A' that encodes plant, area, and sequence information. Your predictive platform probably uses a UUID or serial number from the sensor gateway. These need to map 1:1, and that mapping needs to be maintained as assets get replaced, relocated, or renumbered. In Maximo, assets have a SITEID + ASSETNUM composite key. The failure code problem is real
Your predictive platform will classify a failure as 'bearing inner race defect' or 'mechanical looseness.' Your CMMS failure catalog might have 'bearing failure' as one option under 'pump' problems. These don't map cleanly. You have two choices: expand your CMMS failure codes to match the predictive platform's granularity (better for data quality, harder to adopt), or create a mapping table that collapses predictive categories into your existing CMMS codes (easier to adopt, loses detail). SAP deserves its reputation
If you're running SAP PM on ECC, budget 2-3x the integration time and cost compared to cloud CMMS platforms. The most important design decision is where the human validation step goes. Fully automated work order creation - where every alert above a threshold automatically creates a work order - sounds efficient but fails in practice. False positives create junk work orders. Technicians start ignoring PdM-generated work orders because they've been burned too many times. Within 6 months, your planners are manually filtering PdM work orders, which defeats the purpose.

The feedback loop (step 6) is what separates programs that improve over time from programs that plateau. If your CMMS work order outcomes never make it back to the predictive platform, the models can't learn from their mistakes. This requires either a scheduled sync (nightly pull of completed work orders) or a webhook trigger when work orders close. Maximo-Specific Integration Guide
IBM Maximo is the most common enterprise CMMS in heavy manufacturing, so it's worth covering specifics. If you're running Maximo 7.6 or later (including MAS 8), you have access to OSLC (Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration) APIs that provide RESTful endpoints for most objects: assets (MXASSET), work orders (MXWO), service requests (MXSR), and locations (MXLOCATION).
The typical integration flow for Maximo starts with reading the asset hierarchy via the MXASSET resource. You'll pull ASSETNUM, SITEID, LOCATION, STATUS, and any custom fields you use for criticality ranking. This forms your asset mapping table. Maintaining the Integration Long-Term
The integration isn't done when it goes live. It's done when it's been running reliably for 6 months without manual intervention.
